“Asia has enormous potential. There wouldn’t be enough avocados in the world to supply China if everybody there consumed this fruit”

The Peruvian avocado market is going through a period of significant adjustments in 2025, marked by an increase in volumes, falling prices, and logistical challenges that are impacting exporters. According to Giannina Denegri, general manager of Marand Company, this hasn’t been a particularly good or bad season. It’s been a normal season but with significantly higher volumes than in 2024, and a growth range of 25% to 35%.

“Oversupply has put downward pressure on prices. Medium sizes (18 to 24) account for most of the harvest. The average prices for size 18 stand at around 9.5 to 10 euros per kilo, while size 20 prices range between 8 and 9 euros, and size 24 prices between 7 and 8 euros,” she said. These prices are considerably lower than last year and will continue to fall as the season progresses, she added.

“The main destination for Peruvian avocados is still Europe, which absorbs about 65% of Marand Company’s shipments. Asia (mainly China and Japan) accounts for the remaining 35%. However, prices have also fallen in the Asian market. Each company has to find its niche in the market,” Denegri stated.

There have been significant logistical hurdles this season. “There’s been a shortage of controlled atmosphere containers, which are vital to maintain the fruit’s quality in transit. In addition, sea freight costs have increased significantly. This increase in freight, added to the saturation of the European market due to the large volumes from Peru, complicates profitability for many exporters,” she stressed.

The quality of the fruit has improved thanks to the reduction in transit time with direct routes to Asian ports such as Shanghai, which has decreased travel days, reducing the risk of avocado spoilage.

Marand Company expects to maintain constant exports until September, although with lower volumes due to market pressure. In the long term, Denegri sees growth opportunities, especially in Asia. The company plans to participate in international fairs such as Asia Fruit Logistics and Fruit Attraction in Madrid to consolidate its presence in the European and Asian markets. “Asia has enormous potential. There wouldn’t be enough avocados in the world to supply China if everybody there consumed this fruit,” he stated.
