AC Foods upgrades citrus packing shed in Victoria

AC Foods/Legacy Packing has announced a multi-million-dollar upgrade to its packing shed located on Campbell Road, Cobram, Victoria. The investment is the company’s largest in the Southern Hemisphere and is directed at new equipment and building works.

According to AC Foods Australia General Manager Brett Jackson, the upgrade will enable the shed to handle more than five times the volume of its current capacity. “We will be able to tip in excess of 2,000 bins of Sumo Citrus a day when commissioned,” he said.

The facility upgrade includes a partnership with TOMRA, a manufacturer of sensor-based sorting machines and integrated harvest solutions. The project will install a 10-lane pre-grade and 10-lane commit-to-pack line with TOMRA’s newest AI-based sorting technology, LucAI. This installation will be TOMRA’s largest in the Asia-Pacific region.

Following completion, Legacy Packing expects to process more than 200,000 bins of citrus annually, in addition to stonefruit and other produce.

Industry observers note that the scale of this development reflects growing investment in citrus production and packing capacity in Australia.
