“A positive start to the chestnut season, with production in line with expectations”

“We are currently in the midst of our local chestnut delivery season. The quality is excellent, and the average size is large. The weather has also helped us maintain healthy products so far,” says Giancarlo Elmi, the owner of Mitica Srl, an Italian company located in the province of Bologna in the Emilia-Romagna region, that grows, harvests, processes, and markets chestnuts and marrons.

“So far, the campaign is within normal expectations in terms of quantity, or slightly above,” Elmi points out. “It is certainly not a year of excessive production. Instead, we are very satisfied with the product’s quality, which allows for good storage. However, we always perform all the necessary operations to ensure a long shelf life.”

All operations aimed at extending the product’s shelf life naturally take place in the warehouse. Each batch is precisely scanned from start to finish, from pre-cleaning and sterilization to grading and packaging.

Mitica has redesigned the packaging for its steamed products, which are sold under the brand name “GNAM.” New colors distinguish the organic products from the conventional ones. Chestnuts and other products use the same logo and labeling, but are distinguished by different colors. Each 75-gram bag is an ideal quantity for snacking or serving, according to many buyers.

The packaging for chestnut flour has also been improved with a 400-gram package that matches the color of the flour.

Mitica’s three primary commercial brands, Nella, Nando, and Gino, correspond to different varieties of chestnut. The Florentine chestnut is one of the national varieties that meets all specifications for superior quality. It is aimed at an increasingly attentive clientele concerned with quality, as well as respect for nature and the territory.

Mitica Srl exports 40% of its products and primarily works with large retail chains in Italy and abroad. The company is one of the largest in the Italian sector. “We export a significant volume of goods to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland,” Elmi concludes, “while in Italy, we collaborate with all the major large-scale retail chains.”
