Vietnamese Krong Pac durian road harvest stable

Farmers in Krong Pac, Dak Lak province, are currently harvesting the 2025 durian crop, with this season described as stable in terms of pricing.

Le Cong Loc from hamlet 6B in Krong Pac commune manages 100 durian trees. His orchard yielded 15 tons in 2024, and this year he expects about 20 tons due to favorable weather. Since the start of the season, prices have remained around VND60,000 (US$2.35) per kg. After costs, his family anticipates earnings of about VND1 billion (US$39,200). Loc estimated annual care costs at VND1 million (US$39) per tree, with each tree yielding 100–200 kg of fruit and generating profits of VND5–10 million (US$196–392).

“This year, many families in the hamlet are earning from VND500 million to VND1 billion. Compared to pepper, durian provides a more sustainable and profitable source of income. Durian has brought prosperity not only to my family but to the entire community,” he said.

Nguyen Huong, who cultivates 65 durian trees, expects nearly 12 tons and earnings of about VND600 million (US$23,500).

National Highway 26 has become known as the “durian road” as trucks and traders line up to collect fruit from Krong Pac. On September 3, the 28-km stretch from Tan Lap ward to Krong Pac commune was filled with durian containers and trucks. Inside warehouses, workers operated around the clock to prepare shipments.

Durian trader Nguyen Xuan Bang said his company has been purchasing fruit for export to China, with most sourced from Krong Pac. Since August 25, prices have ranged between VND55,000 and VND65,000 (US$2.15–2.55) per kg. “I’ve been in the durian business for four years, but I’ve never seen the market so vibrant,” he said, noting the large presence of traders in the commune.

According to commune chair Lai Duc Dai, this year’s season has been supported by stable prices, consistent quality, and favorable weather. He added that premium fruit could be sold fresh, while substandard lots could be diverted to freezing units, ensuring market access.

Krong Pac is recognized as a hub for durian production and trade in Dak Lak, with collection and packing facilities also handling fruit from Gia Lai, Lam Dong, and Dong Nai. The commune currently has 2,800 hectares of durian, with 2025 yields projected at 42,000 tons. Authorities emphasized plantation codes and packing management to maintain export credibility.

Recent contamination cases of auramine O and cadmium were reported in other regions, but no such findings have occurred in Dak Lak or Krong Pac.
