Egypt’s Suez Canal welcomes largest vessel in two years

Admiral Ossama Rabiee, Chairman and Managing Director of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), announced the transit of the container ship CMA CGM BENJAMIN FRANKLIN through the Canal, marking the largest vessel to pass through the waterway in the past two years.

The ship, operated by the French carrier CMA CGM, measures 399 meters in length and 54 meters in width, with a carrying capacity of 17,859 containers and a net tonnage of 177,000 tons. It was part of the northbound convoy sailing from the United Kingdom to Malaysia and continued its voyage through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

According to Admiral Rabiee, the transit reflects a gradual return of large container vessels to the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, supported by improving regional conditions. He noted that the SCA’s marketing policies and operational incentives have contributed to restoring 28 medium-sized vessel voyages and two larger vessel transits through the Canal.

Admiral Rabiee added that CMA CGM had rerouted another vessel, the ZHENG HE, from the Cape of Good Hope back to the Suez Canal, indicating renewed engagement by major shipping lines with the route.

“The safe passage of CMA CGM BENJAMIN FRANKLIN through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait sends a reassuring message that stability has returned to the region,” said Admiral Rabiee. “This marks an important step toward restoring normal maritime traffic through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.”
