The season is over for the wines in Moldova Note of export quantities

“The table grapes export season in Moldova is coming to a close in an unprecedented year. Moldova was able to sell more than 84,000 tons of table grapes in the harvest of 2023, which is which is a huge increase from the 57,000 tonnes exported during the prior year’s harvest.

This remarkable result is attributable to both favorable weather conditions as well as recent improvements in wine production and post-harvest facilities. This year, the European market share of Moldovan grapes increased from 35% during the last year to more than 50% this season.

Moldovan grapes were able to make it not just into wholesale markets, but also on supermarket shelves across a variety of EU countries like Romania, Poland, Croatia as well as Latvia. Exports to Netherlands, Germany, and Great Britain also increased, as did exports to Germany, Great Britain, and the Netherlands. Moldova also made the first ever exports of grapes to Sweden.

It is interesting to note that 80% of all exported grapes belong to the variety ‘Moldova. The Moldovan table grape industry has witnessed significant growth the past few times. Exports of grapes have increased by a third in the past 10 years, despite Moldova exporting only 37,000 tonnes in 2013. The increase in exports can be attributable to the widespread use modern methods of viticulture. Moldovan producers are increasingly using intense vine training methods like tendone/pergola as well as gable that result in better yields and better quality grapes. In the last few years over 800 hectares of these varieties of vineyards were established.

These incredibly dense plantations have yields that are that are four times greater than conventional vineyards while they also produce premium quality grapes. Actually, an astounding 98% of the wines that are harvested from modern plantations are classified as Extra Class I or Class I. The most well-known varieties that are that are grown in tendone/pergola systems of Moldova comprise Moldova, Jupiter, and Muscat de Hambourg (Black Muscat).”
